Granite

A hard, igneous rock, granite is one of the top choices for countertops and other home improvement projects for good reason. Granite’s renowned durability and its variety of colors make ideal for use in kitchens and bathrooms, around fireplaces, and in other locations throughout the home. It holds up to heat and is almost maintenance-free, so you can use your countertops without worrying about damaging them. If you’re willing to make the investment now, granite will last you a lifetime.

Quartzite

Quartzite is an extremely durable, heat-resistant, and stain-resistant natural stone, making it an ideal choice for countertops. Formed from sandstone and quartz, quartzite is harder than quartz and develops an appearance similar to veined marble. Quartzite typically comes in gray and white and is resistant to chips and scratches.

Marble

Marble was used for building tombs, temples, and palaces. For a long time, it was considered as Royal Stone. It is, however, now used in hotels and homes too.

Taj Mahal made by ivory-white marble

There are many varieties such as Makrana marble used in the Taj Mahal, Kishangarh Marble the world’s largest marble-producing area, with over 2,000 gang saw units located in India, Andhi Marble a dolomitic marble with intrusions of tremolite, Slumber Marble also known as Onyx Marble, Rajasthan – Abu Black a rare black textured marble, Madhya Pradesh – Katni Range: famous beige colored marble, Indian Green Marble, etc

Marble comes with one of the higher price tags found among natural stone, but the finished appearance is worth it. This type of stone is formed from intense heat and pressure, creating beautiful colors and intricate lines throughout the stonework. Marble comes in many colors and is both waterproof and heatproof, although it does require regular maintenance to prevent stains.

Marble – The Cozi and Charming
Marble is one of the most elegant natural stones in the world. It has been used for centuries to construct palaces fit for kings and statues dedicated to gods.

If marble stone is free from all impurities, it will be solid white. Most marble, however, contains other minerals and can be bluish, gray, pink, yellow, or black. The colors won’t be stark, though. Any other bright and vibrant colors likely indicate that it’s human-made or that it is a natural stone mixed with other materials.

True marble will also have an unparalleled glossiness. This is often replicated in synthetic stones by adding small bits of glass and other materials, but it does not carry the same lasting shine of marble.

Marble is made naturally through thousands of years of heat and pressure. The colors of other minerals will appear as veins or swirls throughout the stone, with no repeating or symmetrical patterns and at varying depths and dimensions. Marble is also somewhat translucent, often allowing you to see a few millimeters past the surface, which gives the material more depth.

The reason marble is so popular with artists and architects alike is that it is relatively soft and easy to cut and carve. The most reliable way to tell if you are looking at real marble is to test its hardness by cutting with something sharp like a knife. A real marble top will show scratches and etching over time. If you scratch a knife on a marble top and don’t see the damage, the surface is likely granite or manufactured stone.

Marble brings to mind the splendor of ancient Rome, timeless architecture that inspires and uplifts all those who look upon it. Maybe I’m being a bit dramatic, but the fact remains that marble is certainly the most awe-inspiring of all the natural stones. Although marble will provide the maximum possible upgrade to your home’s atmosphere, it does come with certain downsides. As with all three stones we will be examining in this article, let’s establish a list of pros and cons that will inform your final decision on which stone to use for your project:
Pros

Heat-resistant. This allows hot pots and pans to be placed on its surface and makes marble suitable for fireplace construction.
Very few other stones can match marble’s exquisite beauty.
If well-maintained can increase the property value of your home Travertine

A form of limestone, travertine typically comes in white, tan, and cream colors. Travertine forms in mineral springs and is a sedimentary rock that is often used in construction. In particular, many homeowners and builders use travertine for patios and garden paths.

Soapstone
This dark gray or green stone has a soft, smooth feel to it, almost like the feeling of running your hand along a bar of dry soap. Soapstone is a popular choice for kitchen or bathroom countertops when you’re interested in fostering a more natural or rustic look in your home. It can be used as countertop material or sink material and is somewhat resistant to staining, but it does require regular maintenance with mineral oil.

Onyx

Onyx is a beautiful mineral with distinctive bands of color running through the stone. Though black and white are among the most common colors for onyx, these minerals can also feature reds, purples, blues, and more. Onyx has long been used in decorative architecture and sculpture, providing a beautiful accent for your home villa hotel hospital and projects.
Marble and Granite

These are natural stone materials, and both are porous. If you want the technical details, marble is a metamorphic rock formed from recrystallized carbon. It is formed out of limestone that is subjected to intense pressure and heat due to tectonic shifting in the earth’s crust.

On the other hand, granite is an igneous rock composed of grains of compressed quartz, feldspar, mica, and similar materials. This means that granite is slightly harder than marble, but both offer reasonably good durability.

Natural stone is a creation of nature. Like so many natural formations, every piece is unique and matchless. Within each piece of stone also lies the history of one particular place on our planet. Today’s limestone floor, for instance, was once a mass of tiny sea creatures, then an ancient seabed, and—after millions of years of uplift—a mountainside where the limestone was discovered.

Your natural stone is cut out from a mountainside, in large 50,000-pound blocks of stone. These blocks are then sliced into slabs, which are then refined to give their natural colors a mirror-like depth, a smooth surface, or a slight roughness to enhance their rich, natural texture.

Luster, hardness, colors, and variation are all indications of a stone’s mineral composition and origin. This unique blend of characteristics is what makes natural stone a one-of-a-kind, beautiful, and practical surface for your home.

INDIAN MARBLE, GRANITE AND NATURAL STONES INDUSTRY
India has a remarkable variety of natural stones that include granite, marble, sandstone, limestone, slate, and quartzite, spread out all over the country. India is also amongst the largest producer of raw stone material, with superior quality, low prices, and the most advanced technology for quarrying and processing of stone.

The Indian natural stone industry is evolved in the production and the manufacturing of dimensional stone blocks for monumental and building purposes, in all forms of structural slabs, flooring slabs, structural slabs, calibrated ready to fix tiles, in processed monuments and tombstones, in cobbles, cubes, curbs and landscape garden stones, etc.

The most serious contender of the Indian natural stones industry in China, especially in the granite trade due to its lower prices. Spain is an important contender too. Spanish industries investing mainly in the infrastructure and machinery increase their production capabilities to a greater extent.

Marble was used for building tombs, temples, and palaces. For a long time, it was considered as Royal Stone. It is, however, now used in hotels and homes too.

Questions of Granite, Marble and Natural stone

Granite is less expensive than marble, starting at roughly 75/square foot installed and 500 more than that for higher-end stone. Installed marble starts at around 100/square foot and can go over 5000.

Natural Stone and Tile. Marble tile is a natural stone material that is millions of years old. Marble is a nonfoliated metamorphic rock resulting from the metamorphism of limestone. Travertine is a type of limestone but differs in that it formed in hot springs called karst.

What exactly is the difference? Marble typically has veining whereas granite has more fleck-like, granular appearance but it can’t be stated as a rule. Based on its composition, natural stone has two general categories: Siliceous stone is composed mainly of silica or quartz-like particles.

Both marble and granite countertops are quite durable, but ONLY if they are properly sealed. Granite and marble are porous, so without a seal, liquids will penetrate and stain.

SHOULD I USE GRANITE OR MARBLE FOR MY KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS?

Marble is typically used for bathroom vanity tops, Jacuzzi tops, and fireplaces. It is not usually recommended for kitchen countertops due to the fact that it is easy to scratch and acidic substances such as vinegar, ketchup, citrus beverages, etc. can affect it. Also, the high-gloss of the marble countertop may be partially lost as many chemicals etch its surface.

Granite, however, is considered the second hardest stone. Most granite is not subject to etching by household acids or scratching by knives and pots or pans under normal use. It is also not affected by typical kitchen heat such as hot pans.

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN GRANITE AND OTHER STONES?
Granite is sealed before it is installed. This will ensure lasting life and beauty. Granite may be cleaned with a mild phosphate-free, biodegradable liquid dish soap, soap flakes, or powder, which contains aromatics. Granite should always be cleaned and sealed with cleaning products specifically designed for natural stone.

CAN I CUT ON MY GRANITE COUNTERTOP?
Cutting on your Granite countertops will not harm your granite. Granite is actually harder than your knife and will quickly dull your blade.

CAN MY GRANITE COUNTERTOP BE DAMAGED?

CAN I CUT ON MY GRANITE COUNTERTOP?
Cutting on your Granite countertops will not harm your granite. Granite is actually harder than your knife and will quickly dull your blade.

CAN MY GRANITE COUNTERTOP BE DAMAGED?
Granite is a very durable stone. It is much harder than marble. Granite has been used in the past in the commercial industry and will withstand almost any element it comes up against including cold and heat. High impact blows can harm granite just like any other solid surface. Because of its crystalline structure, granite can chip if subjected to sharp hard objects. A chip can be filled with a granite dust and epoxy mixture. Granite that is not sealed properly may absorb stains such as oils, which may cause dark spots or discoloration. The heat from pots and pans or burning liquids will not harm granite under normal conditions.

CAN I SET HOT POTS ON MY GRANITE COUNTERTOPS?
Granite is formed by extreme heat and pressure combined beneath the earth’s crust. It cannot be affected by heat from a cooktop or frying pan. Granite will not burn with ordinary use. It is perfectly ok to set hot pots or pans directly from the stove or oven onto granite.

CAN GRANITE CRACK?
Not with ordinary use. Granite is most susceptible to cracks during shipping and installation. Normal use will not crack granite.

WHAT DO I NEED TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A GRANITE COUNTERTOP?
Granite is a natural stone. It is very hard and durable, heat and scratch-resistant, as well as, easy to maintain. It is also very versatile in design.
